Morosanu ferocious in GLORY debut victory

By his own admission, Catalin Morosanu is not a man who does tactics or finesse. His gameplan is identical in every fight: power forward, place his head almost flush onto his opponent's chest and wing overhand rights and lefts until the opponent goes down or finds a way to stop him.

His opponent Maurice Greene knew what was coming, but knowing it and stopping it are two different things. On paper, it seems like a fairly straightforward task. In practice, it is very difficult. Morosanu's output may be limited in variety but it is relentless in output and he only needs to land one bomb to finish the fight.

Any hopes Greene had of keeping Morosanu at distance were dashed in the opening seconds of the fight. Morosanu charged forward like a man possessed and started windmilling punches. Cheers erupted from the large Romanian contingent in the crowd as their hero went to work.

Greene was not there to be run over though. He was prepared for what was coming and he responded in kind, resulting in one of the most frantic and action-packed first rounds the GLORY ring has ever hosted, Morosanu spamming overhands and the taller Greene ploughing knees into his midriff in response.

'The Carpathian Death' didn't blast through Greene's defense in the first but he did put some cracks in it. Those cracks widened in the second and then fell wide open as Morosanu's relentless pressure made Greene begin pulling his head back to avoid punches.

During a scrappy exchange in one corner Greene pulled his head back, his chin jutting into the air. Morosanu's left hand found it, snapping across Greene's jawline and sending the bigger man crashing to the canvas.

Greene was badly rocked and took some seconds to regain his feet. He was inside the referee's count when he regained perpendicularity but looked unstable. The referee decided he was unable to continue and waved the fight off, giving Morosanu a KO victory in his GLORY debut.
