Chommanee edges Nichols after back-and-forth bout

The GLORY 61 SuperFight Series in New York kicked off with a match-up in the women’s super bantamweight division as Thailand’s Chommanee Sor Taehiran (92-17-1, 15 KO’s) made her debut against Canada’s Ashley Nichols (12-6).

It was a slow start for both fighters as they looked for openings in their opponent’s defense. Chommanee frequently switched stances, which prevented Nichols from finding her range. 

A brief clinch from the Thai resulted in a series of knees. Nichols scored with punches from boxing range, but Chommanee countered with kicks to the body.

The left kick from Chommanee was the weapon of choice early in round two. She cracked the body of Nichols, but could not slow the Canadian’s forward march. 

Nichols was able to deliver a heavy right hand along the ropes, but Chommanee was unfazed. The left kick of Chommanee continued to be effective throughout the round, landing every time Nichols got in range.

The pair quickly clinched to start the final frame. They traded knees before being separated by the referee. The straight right hand of Nichols find its mark with regularity as the round progressed.

Chommanee continued to clinch, resulting in a warning from the referee. The pressure of Nichols allowed her to score with power punches, popping back the head of Chommanee.

The fight saw the scorecards with Thailand’s Chommanee claiming victory via split decision.
