When Francois Ambang first turned up at the Combat Sports Center in Richmond, Virginia for the pro-fighter training session, hardly anybody gave him a second glance. He spoke little English but was able to say that he had some kickboxing experience and wanted to try out for the fight team.

Having heard many such requests before, the coaches exchanged knowing glances with each other. Then they allowed Ambang to gear up and join the sparring. They expected him to be going back out the door in minutes. Instead he started blitzing seasoned professionals.

His potential was clear and that was underlined when he won a ‘Road to Glory’ welterweight tournament in 2013, beating three opponents in one night to score a GLORY World Series contract. Ambang swears he will be a champion in GLORY and is driven by memories of his poor African childhood.
