FIGHTER BIO

BIO DANYO ILUNGA

Danyo ‘Dibuba’ Ilunga is very popular with fans, not least because of his flamboyant ring entrances in the traditional warrior costume of his native Congo. Ilunga was born in the African republic in 1987 but as a child his family fled to Europe to escape the civil war, settling in Germany. He now represents both Congo and Germany when he fights.

Another reason for his popularity is his fighting style. Ilunga trains under Remy ‘The Flying Dutchman’ Bonjasky and has adopted some of the three-time K-1 winner’s infamous flamboyance. Bonjasky is famed for his use of the flying knee and this technique has also found its way into Ilunga’s own tool-kit, along with the occasional flying kick.

Ilunga made his professional debut in 2008 and dominated the German circuit for several years until receiving a call to debut for It's Showtime, at the time Europe’s leading kickboxing organization. Ilunga fought Wendell Roche for the vacant light-heavyweight title which had been vacated by Tyrone Spong following his move up to heavyweight.

As he was not very well known outside of the German scene, Ilunga surprised a lot of people by outworking Roche over five rounds, scoring well with counter attacks and visibly frustrating him on the way to taking a unanimous decision victory and the It's Showtime world title belt. In October last year he made his GLORY debut with a unanimous decision win over Turkey’s Ali Cenik and he hopes to capture the GLORY Light-Heavyweight title in 2013.
